Who is Required to get a DOT Physical Exam?
A DOT (Department of Transportation) physical exam is required for anyone who operates a motor vehicle for the purpose of interstate commerce with a weight of over 10,000 pounds. It’s also required of anyone who operates a vehicle designed to carry more than 15 passengers, anyone who’s paid to operate a motor vehicle that’s designed to carry more than eight people, and anyone who is transporting hazardous material.
Why do People Need a DOT Physical Exam?
Getting a DOT physical exam is required because large truck or commercial vehicle drivers are behind the wheel for long hours and are responsible for the safety of others.. Driving for a long time can be mentally exhausting and physically draining. The DOT exam not only helps to protect the wellbeing of drivers and passengers, but also prevents anyone who may not be fit for the job from getting behind the wheel.
What Disqualifies Someone During a DOT Exam?
Disqualifying medical conditions can include:
- heart conditions,
- inner ear disorders like vertigo,
- high blood pressure,
- respiratory conditions,
- vision or hearing loss,
- and anything else that could affect driving.
For one reason or another, all of these conditions disqualify individuals from being able to drive large or passenger vehicles. For example, if you have any type of hearing loss, you might not hear the sound of someone honking at you which can help you to avoid an accident. If you have high blood pressure or a respiratory condition, you may experience a medical emergency while behind the wheel.
The DOT physical exam not only ensures that the driver is healthy and fit for the job, but ensures that they’ll be able to drive safely for long hours without harming anyone else on the road because of their conditions.
How Often Do I Need a DOT Exam?
The DOT exam is valid for up to 24 months, meaning you’ll need to be re-examined every 24 months or less. If your condition requires closer monitoring, you may be required to return more often.
What Can I Expect during a DOT Physical Exam?
During a DOT exam, you can expect the doctor to check the following:
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Vision (drivers are required to have at least 20/40 vision in each eye)
- Hearing (to ensure you can hear adequately)
- Spine (for deformities or scoliosis)
- Mouth and throat (for trouble breathing or swallowing)
- Coordination and reflexes
- Heart and lungs
- Abdomen (for abnormalities or hernias)
- Urine (for underlying health conditions)
- Drug screen (to ensure you’re drug-free)
If you pass your DOT physical exam, you’ll be issued a certificate and be required to return in 24 months for another examination.
